What HCG is

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the human placenta; the FDA-approved injectable products are supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder in multiple-dose vials of 5,000 or 10,000 USP Units, packaged with a vial of Bacteriostatic Water for Injection as the diluent.

hCG is measured in USP Units — used interchangeably with International Units (IU) — rather than in milligrams, so its concentration works out as units per mL: approved labeling shows a 10,000-unit vial reconstituted with 1 mL of diluent giving 10,000 units/mL, and the same vial reconstituted with 10 mL giving 1,000 units/mL.

Recombinant products such as choriogonadotropin alfa are labeled by mass in micrograms instead, so a microgram figure and a unit figure are not interchangeable between products.

What does a 10,000 IU vial of HCG come out to with different amounts of bacteriostatic water?

Concentration is the mass in the vial divided by the volume it is in, so changing only the volume changes every downstream number: 5 mL computes to 2,000 IU/mL, making a 500 IU dose 0.25 mL (25 units); 10 mL computes to 1,000 IU/mL, making a 500 IU dose 0.5 mL (50 units); 20 mL computes to 500 IU/mL, making a 500 IU dose 1 mL (100 units). Each figure is arithmetic on the two values stated, not a statement that any of those volumes is the one to use.

How many 500 IU doses are in a 10,000 IU vial of HCG?

Dividing 10,000 IU by 500 IU computes to 20 full doses. Only whole doses are counted — any remainder smaller than a full dose is left out of that figure. Different vial contents or a different dose produce a different count; enter yours in the calculator above.

What concentration is 10,000 IU of HCG in 10 mL?

10,000 IU in 10 mL computes to 1,000 IU/mL. From that concentration, the volume holding a 500 IU dose is 0.5 mL, or 50 units on a U-100 syringe. This page reports that division; it does not evaluate the numbers you put into it.

How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a vial of HCG?

That volume is an input to this calculator, not an output of it — this page does not pick a volume for you and nothing here says which one to use. What it can tell you is what each choice computes to: 10,000 IU with 5 mL works out to 2,000 IU/mL, and the same 10,000 IU with 20 mL works out to 500 IU/mL. The mass in the vial never changes; only the concentration and the volume you would draw do.
